To achieve net-zero, there is an urgent need to build capacity and develop the skills of non-state actors.
For any organization to decarbonize their emissions and reach net-zero, UACA has identified 3 key areas:
- 1. Baselining Emissions – Organizations need to measure their emissions accurately to understand where their starting point is.
- 2. Target Setting – once organizations have a clear idea on their starting point including their total emissions across Scopes 1, 2 and 3, they would then aim to set a mid-term (2030) and long-term (2050) target aligned to science and/or the Paris Agreement of limiting global warming to 1.5 °C. For corporate entities, UACA recommends using the Science Based Targets initiative.
- 3. Action Planning – Organizations will need to assess what key actions, projects and initiatives they can implement to reduce emissions within their operations.
Through the capacity building workstream, UACA aims to improve the capacity and develop the skills of organizations, providing them with the technical ability to confidently measure emissions, set targets and implement decarbonization initiatives in their organizations to drive climate action.
As UACA is a Member-led initiative, Members will collaboratively discuss the decarbonization areas they wish to learn more about and deep dive into. Since launching at COP27, UACA has delivered the following webinars, workshops and peer-to-peer learning sessions to date:
